What is 3D Tomosynthesis?

Digital tomosynthesis, or 3D mammography, takes multiple X-ray pictures of each breast from many angles with little pressure applied to the breast. The X-ray tube moves in an arc around the breast while 11 images are taken during a seven second examination, providing several more angles than a traditional mammogram. The information is then sent to a computer where it is assembled to provide clear, highly-focused 3-dimensional images of the breast. The clear and highly-focused images allow physicians to detect breast cancer in its earliest stages, especially for patients with dense breast tissue. The screening process is also more comfortable for the patient.

UofL Health Breast Care has achieved a designation of an American College of Radiology (ACR) Breast Imaging Center of Excellence. By awarding breast centers this status, the ACR recognizes breast imaging centers that have earned accreditation in stereotactic biopsy and breast ultrasound with ultrasound-guided biopsy in addition to the mandatory Mammography Accreditation Program. ACR evaluation determined that these facilities have achieved high practice standards in image quality, personnel qualifications, facility equipment, quality control procedures and quality assurance procedures.
