About Adjustable Gastric Banding

During this procedure, a band is placed around the uppermost part of the stomach, dividing it into one smaller and one larger portion. The technique works by restricting how much you can consume at a meal, while helping you feel full longer. Food passes through the digestive system as usual, allowing full absorption.

The band can be adjusted with a simple in-office procedure to increase or decrease restriction. You’ll be followed closely within the first year after surgery for adjustments as needed. Lifelong adjustments may be required to maintain success.

Advantages

  • Only adjustable and reversible weight loss surgical procedure
  • Usually performed on an outpatient basis, allowing you to go home the same day as surgery
  • Carries less surgical risk than gastric bypass or sleeve gastrectomy

Disadvantages

  • Slower and less total weight loss than bypass or sleeve gastrectomy (generally around 50% loss of excess weight)
  • Though rare, complications can occur from the gastric banding system, including band obstruction or slippage
