Q:  What is the Healthy Lifestyle Center?  Is it a gym?
A:  The Healthy Lifestyle Centers have many of the same training tools you find in a traditional gym:  treadmills, ellipticals, stationary bikes, and weights. What makes us different is the supervision provided by our registered nurses, exercise physiologists, respiratory therapists, social worker and registered dietitian—as well as the holistic offerings that benefit all dimensions of health. Many gyms focus solely on physical health, but we have programs to address your spiritual, social, mental, and emotional well-being, as well as integrative services like yoga, tai chi, massage and meditation. We strive to bring wellness, healing, and hope to all by caring for the whole person.

Our many options mean that we have a program for you. If you are looking for ways to improve your health after a serious heart or lung event, consider our cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation services, covered by most major insurance. If you are new to exercising and need the guidance of our expert exercise prescription, join our lifestyle medicine program, available through a monthly membership fee. If you want to experience the healing of our integrative services, you can sign up for a class or make an appointment for individualized services.

Q:  What are the hours of the Healthy Lifestyle Centers?

Q:  How do I join the Healthy Lifestyle Center?
A:  To join the Lifestyle Connect Program, just give us a call to schedule a clinical assessment, a sixty to ninety minute meeting with a Healthy Lifestyle Center clinician. We will contact your physician to ensure you are cleared to participate. Cardiac and pulmonary rehab participants require a physician referral; our staff will contact your physician to obtain this order. Anyone can join a class or make an appointment for an integrative service. 

Q:  I am in good health and would like to join the Healthy Lifestyle Center to maintain my health.  Do I still need to complete an assessment when I join?
A:  Yes. We provide this assessment to ensure the safety of all members, inside and outside our centers.  We will use the results from the assessment to provide guidance in creating an exercise prescription tailored just for you.

Q:  What is involved in the clinical assessment?
A:  Our clinical assessment helps us to guide your exercise prescription and provide you with the tools you need to meet your health goals. Prior to your appointment, you will receive a packet of information to complete and bring along to the Healthy Lifestyle Center. During this assessment, which will take sixty to ninety minutes, a clinician will discuss your medical history, any medications you take, and your goals for the program. Knowing this health history allows us to create an exercise regimen to reflect the goals you want to achieve. We will discuss any procedures you have undergone, what led to that event, and your current lifestyle patterns. We will focus on your specific health goals and address any health issues. During this conversation, we can help you decide which Healthy Lifestyle Center services are best for you. 

In addition, the clinician will complete a physical assessment. This involves measuring your resting heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen saturation (the amount of oxygen carried in your blood).  We also examine incisional healing (if applicable) and check for edema in your feet and legs. Finally, we weigh you and measure your hips and waist. In addition to providing vital clinical information, this baseline helps gauge your progress throughout the program.

After taking these measurements, you complete a six-minute walk test, measuring your body’s response to activity by checking your heart rate and oxygen levels every minute of the walk. Immediately after the walk, we discuss how hard you felt you were working and check for any shortness of breath. Five minutes after the walk is finished, your blood pressure, heart rate, and a few other measures are taken again. This helps us prescribe the appropriate level of activity for you.

Q:  Do I need an assessment to participate in the integrative medicine services at the Healthy Lifestyle Center?
A: No, anyone may take part in the integrative medicine services (massage, tai chi, yoga, etc.).  We do recommend you consult with your doctor before beginning any new activity.

Q:  Will I be monitored the entire time I am in the Healthy Lifestyle Center?  How will that be done?
A:  Cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation members are monitored using telemetry throughout each workout. Your heart rate and other vital signs are constantly monitored via small, adhesive electrodes that you wear while exercising. Lifestyle medicine members are visually monitored by the clinical staff.  

Q:  Will my insurance cover the cost of a membership?
Cardiac and pulmonary rehab are covered by most insurance plans We will assist in verifying your insurance coverage and determining any out-of-pocket expenses you would incur.

Q:  I am interested in your integrative medicine services.  Do I have to join the Healthy Lifestyle Center to receive those services?
A:  You do not have to join but, however tai chi and yoga are included in the membership for the Lifestyle Connect Program. 

Q:  I have some questions about my diet.  Can you help?
A:  We have a registered dietitian available at all three locations to provide individualized nutrition counseling. Members receive this service at no additional charge. You may also make an appointment with the dietitian without a membership, payable out of pocket. Please contact us to schedule a convenient time.

Q:  Can I go month by month or do I have to sign up for a year?
A:  We do not have contracts, so you can discontinue at any time. 

Q:  Do you offer trials?
A:  We do not offer trials at this time, but you can discontinue your membership at any time.
