Knee Injury in Sports

Participation in organized and recreational sports is at an all time high.  There is inherent risk of injury in all athletes who participate in sports.  According to The High School Sports Related Injury Surveillance Study it is estimated that 1,392,262 sports related injuries occurred during the 2011-12 sports season.  13% of these injuries (186,254) involved the knee.  The American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine states that 150,000 anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries occur each year.   Female athletes that participate in basketball and soccer are two to eight times more likely to sustain a knee injury than their male counterparts.

Why are knee injuries so common?

There are many factors that place an athlete at risk for knee injury.  Extrinsic factors (those that are external to the athlete) are the type of playing surface, shoe wear, being hit by another player, etc.  Intrinsic factors (those that are internal to the athlete) are mostly related to anatomy and level of training.  Muscle tightness, muscle weakness, poor conditioning, joint hypermobility, hip, knee and foot alignment can all play a role in injury.  For example, it is believed that women are at higher risk for injury because they more likely to have a wider pelvis, hyperpronated feet, and more flexible joints.  In addition some research shows that as women approach puberty, they may have slower neuromuscular responses, and weakening of the muscles that help to protect the knee.

How can a Knee Injury Prevention Program Help Reduce Risk?

Current research demonstrates that a preventative program focusing on education, strength training, and cardiovascular training can help reduce the risk of knee injury in both men and women.  These programs focus on strengthening the muscles that improve the position of the knee during high level sports, and protect the anterior cruciate ligament.  In addition these programs teach athletes how to land and change direction properly.  Lastly these programs help to improve cardiovascular fitness which will decrease the level of fatigue during sports competition.

  • Initial program evaluation
  • Instruction in a home training program
  • Medically supervised training sessions (3x per week for 6 weeks)
