Louisville’s LAP-BAND® Leaders

Sts. Mary & Elizabeth surgeons have performed thousands of LAP-BAND® procedures (also called adjustable gastric banding), helping men and women throughout Kentucky take back their health and lives. We also have the only program in the region designed exclusively for the care and management of gastric band patients.

During the 20-30 minute procedure, an inflatable ring is placed around the upper stomach. This creates a smaller gastric pouch, limiting the amount of food the stomach can hold at any time and helping you feel full much longer.

Adjustable gastric banding is the least invasive weight loss surgery available, offering less pain and scarring and fewer complications. After recovering in our dedicated bariatric nursing unit, you may be able to go home the same day as surgery and return to work in less than a week.

This is also the only adjustable and reversible weight loss surgery option. Our surgeons perform all band adjustments themselves with a quick and simple in-office procedure.

ORBERA™: Innovative Nonsurgical Option

Due to our outstanding results with LAP-BAND® surgery, Sts. Mary and Elizabeth was one of the first 10 hospitals in the U.S. selected to perform an innovative new alternative to weight loss surgery.

ORBERA™ is a two-part, 12-month program that may help you lose more than three times the weight of diet and exercise alone—without a single incision.

It starts with a soft balloon that is placed in your stomach endoscopically (through the mouth) for six months to help create a feeling of fullness and reinforce healthy portion control. At the same time, you’ll receive coaching from a team of experts, which may include a registered dietitian, exercise physiologist and health psychologist.

After six months, the balloon is removed through a quick, nonsurgical procedure. Your team will continue to provide counseling for another six months, helping you adopt the healthier habits you need to maintain your weight loss and new way of life.
