Our board-certified bariatric surgeons combine more than 25 years of experience and have performed over 4,000 weight loss procedures. They specialize in two of the least invasive and effective options today—LAP-BAND® surgery and nonsurgical ORBERA™ weight loss balloon—and offer compassionate, hands-on care at every step.

Dr. John Olsofka is a proud native of Mayfield, Kentucky. He completed his undergraduate training at Western Kentucky University, attended the University of Louisville School of Medicine, and remained in Louisville to complete his general surgery training. He is a fellow with the American College of Surgeons and clinical instructor with the University of Louisville.
Dr. Olsofka is board certified in general surgery, with a specialist interest in minimally invasive bariatric surgery techniques which often offer patients less pain and faster recovery. He helped pioneer one the first LAP-BAND® specialty programs in the nation, right here at Uof Health - Mary and Elizabeth Hospital, for which he now serves as director. Dr. Olsofka was also selected as one of the first ten clinicians nationally to be trained in the use of the newly developed, nonsurgical ORBERA™ weight loss balloon procedure.
Dr. Olsofka manages every aspect of his bariatric patient’s care, including all band adjustments after surgery. He is here to provide the clinical expertise and compassionate support you need to achieve your goals.
When he’s not caring for his patients, Dr. Olsofka enjoys spending time with his wife and four children. He is also an active member of the American Society of Bariatric Surgeons, Louisville Surgical Society, Jefferson County Medical Society as well as the Kentucky Medical Association.
Dr. Vincent Lusco III was born and raised in Texas, where he also graduated from the University of Texas at Austin and completed medical school at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio in 1998. He is a fellow with the American College of Surgeons.
In 2001, Dr. Lusco completed his board-certification in general surgery at the University of Louisville, where he received extensive training in advanced laparoscopy and bariatric procedures. That included assisting with the placement of the first ever adjustable gastric band in Louisville.
Along with Dr. Olsofka, Dr. Lusco helped develop the bariatric program at UofL Health - Mary and Elizabeth—the first and only of its kind in the region dedicated to the care and management of LAP-BAND® surgery patients. In addition to participating in national and international studies involving the LAP-BAND®, he also trains surgeons throughout the Midwest and East Coast on how to safely place gastric bands and develop successful programs.
Dr. Lusco was awarded with the Abrahms-Waterman award during his residency for the most compassionate surgical resident, and in 2010 and 2014 was recognized by Louisville Magazine as a Top Surgeon by his peers. It’s that blend of warmth and skill that can help you reach your weight loss and wellness goals.
When he’s not caring for his patients, Dr. Lusco enjoys spending time with his wife, who he met right here in Louisville, and their three sons. He is also an active member of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, The Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons, as well as the Kentucky Medical Association, the Louisville Surgical Society, and Greater Louisville Medical Society.
